After leaving university, following a brief period of service in the Regular Army, Nick pursued a career with campaigning small business organisations. This work involved the conduct of research into the public policy concerns of UK small businesses and mounting campaigns to address their concerns. Campaigns involved a combination of political contact up to and including the highest levels alongside getting “right into the weeds” of individual issues working with (or against!) government officials.
Nick's responsibilities also involved extensive media contact and from the mid 90s for a decade Nick was amongst the highest profile campaigners in this area.
The work of representing private businesses fuelled Nick's desire to build his own business. Before starting in this new direction Nick first decided to volunteer for deployment to Iraq, fulfilling an aspiration to deploy on operations arising from 20+ years of Regular and Reserve (TA) military service. As a Lieutenant Colonel Nick was selected to serve as head of media operations for the British Army in Baghdad while also covering the duties of the British Embassy press attaché.
On return to civilian life, Nick set about building his own business, deciding in a complete change of direction to develop a locally-based business which would not require the extensive travelling away from home his previous life had required. Noticing an absence of adequate provision, Nick decided to enter the taxi business, successfully building from scratch a firm which became (and remains) the largest taxi operator in mid-Cheshire, transporting over 1 million passengers a year with around 60 drivers and providing in total work for around 100 people.
Throughout his life Nick has been an active member of the Conservative Party, participating in branch activity and campaigning locally in every national election as well as numerous bye-elections.
